12 X-Men Books To Read If You Want To Try The Comics

There’s a LOT of X-Men comics and most of them are very confusing, but here are some great starting points, depending on what you’re looking for. But watch out: There are a lot of spoilers in here.

If You Want to Jump Into the Current Status Quo

If You Want to Jump Into the Current Status Quo

Yesterday's X-Men, the first volume of Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen's All New X-Men, is the starting point for the current status quo of the monthly X-Men comics. The story starts in the aftermath of Charles Xavier's death at the hands of his star student Cyclops, who is now leading a "mutant revolution" alongside Emma Frost and Magneto. A grief-stricken Beast decides to get back at Cyclops by bringing the five original X-Men to the present so a teenage Cyclops can see what he becomes. Of course, this all backfires horribly, and sets in motion a number of stories that are still playing out every month in Bendis' All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men series.

Grant Morrison's New X-Men series was a bold new direction for the X-Men that redefined many core characters while introducing many new characters who have since become mainstays of the franchise. Morrison's clever, sci-fi take on the X-Men is available in many forms — split across three paperback volumes, spread across seven digests, compiled in one huge omnibus — but no matter what, start at the beginning. The first storyline, "E Is for Extinction," is one of the all-time best X-stories and introduces Cassandra Nova, one of the team's most nightmarish villains.

When Joss Whedon started his excellent, self-contained Astonishing X-Men series in 2004, he was known as the guy who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, but was still years away from becoming the guy who wrote and directed the Avengers movie. Whedon's take on the X-Men plays to his strengths: lots of great emotional beats, great one-liners, and strong female leads in Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost. This run, which is collected in many forms, is a great place to jump in if you've never read an X-Men comic before, but it's even better if you think of the two volumes as being the two "seasons" following Grant Morrison's three-year epic.

If You Want to Read the Most Iconic X-Men Story

The Dark Phoenix Saga is the most famous of all X-Men stories, and was the point at which Chris Claremont and John Byrne's run on Uncanny X-Men became a huge phenomenon in the world of comics. Some aspects of these comics seem a bit dated today, but the overall story of Jean Grey being possessed by the Phoenix Force and corrupted by the Hellfire Club is a classic, and the basis for many future X-Men comics, cartoons, and movies.

We went to see an X-Men burlesque and rap show, and it was actually pretty awesome.

Webster Hall, a music and dance venue in New York City, recently hosted The X-Travaganza, a night of X-Men themed burlesque and hip-hop.

Because this is a truly bizarre combination of things, we had to be there.

The evening started with the hip-hop part of the show, with nerdcore rapper Adam WarRock spitting rhymes about Cerebro, Magneto, and Beast.

Sadly, he didn't have enough time to perform his excellent tribute to Cyclops.

The burlesque show was emceed by Bastard Keith, who introduced the show as Professor Charles Xavier.

I can do things I couldn't do before but I don't have a lot of control over it. Even when I do not want to do it, I still attract things.

Nikolai was "blasted across the pavement" by the electrical force, and has since decided he no longer wants to be a fireman when he is older, instead going for the more appropriate role of superhero.

Let's Fancast An X-Men Reboot

Imagine, if you will, an entirely new X-Men film franchise set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Uhhh, this post might qualify as fan fiction.

Let's pretend that we live in a better world where Fox is able to put aside its ego and work with Marvel on an X-Men movie franchise that is more faithful to the comics and fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Let's pretend that we live in a better world where Fox is able to put aside its ego and work with Marvel on an X-Men movie franchise that is more faithful to the comics and fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For the X-Men to make sense in the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let's say the X-movies take place a few years ahead of the timeline of the rest of the Marvel films. This way the movies can subtly lay clues for what's to come in other MCU movies while existing off to the side, and in a future where normal humans are horrified by the idea of mutants. We meet the X-Men at the Xavier School, and they've existed for at least a few years, and mostly operate in secret.

The movie should hinge on the love triangle of Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Wolverine.

The movie should hinge on the love triangle of Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Wolverine.

This drawing by Frank Quitely captures the ideal dynamic of these three characters — "good girl" Jean is drawn to the sexy, badass Wolverine, but is still involved with her long-term boyfriend Cyclops. Cyclops should be uptight and angsty, but also be a believable romantic rival of Wolverine — commanding, intense, sexy in a nerdy way.

31 Marvel Tattoos That Will Make You Want To Be A Superhero

41 Marvel Franchises, Ranked From Worst To Best

0
0

Face front, true believers.

For the purposes of this list, a "franchise" is defined as a mainstay Marvel property that has existed in various forms over the years. Though this list mainly focuses on actual comic books, the quality of the characters' use in other media — movies, television, games, toys — was taken into consideration. Longevity, cultural impact, and consistency of quality were key factors in determining the rankings on this list. Some characters who are enjoying a renaissance these days are rated a bit lower because they weren't always good — or even notable — franchises. Maybe someday they'll be ranked higher.

New Warriors

New Warriors

The New Warriors are like a store-brand superhero team comprised of drab, knock-off characters. They started out as ostensibly a junior team of Avengers, but they have no particular mission or reason to exist. The team has been rebooted a few times over and somehow only becomes more bland and forgettable with each new iteration. Today they're best known as the idiot superheroes who caused the disaster that served as the inciting incident of Civil War.

Marvel

Nova

Nova

A lot of characters have been Nova over the years, and all of them have been bland and generic. The Nova Corps is basically just Marvel's blatant ripoff of DC's Green Lantern Corps, and frankly, you're better off just buying actual Green Lantern comics.

Ed McGuinness/Marvel

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider

There is no denying that there is a lot of appeal in the image of a guy with a flaming skull riding around on a motorcycle and whipping a chain around. It's just that this has rarely, if ever, translated into actually good stories.
